Against the imperialist war of Israel against Iran – for an anticapitalist class war!
THE RESPONSIBILITY OF WESTERN IMPERIALISM FOR THIS WAR
For a week now, Israel has been attacking Iran with a massive bombing campaign targeting both military and civilian sites, preceded by a series of assassinations of military officials and other Iranian citizens. For several months, the Israeli army has not only issued threats, but also carried out “targeted killings” and limited bombings of Iranian targets. In response, Iran launched missiles at Israel and sent drones against it.
Although some bourgeois commentators seriously debate whether this attack was decided by the United States, it is nonetheless undeniable that it would not have taken place if the United States – having been informed in advance – had opposed it. Statements by Donald Trump, in which he calls on Iran to “unconditionally surrender,” leave no doubt about American support for the war unleashed by Israel. The only unknown so far remains a direct involvement of the United States in the war. The European imperialist powers immediately responded with the declaration that “Israel has the right to defend itself” (which means to attack as well!). The French president, who, among other things, has abandoned his empty notion of “recognizing” a non-existent Palestinian state, added that France is prepared to defend Israel militarily – thus, a de facto military alliance with the Jewish state exists.
Israel would not be able to wage its war in Gaza, attack Lebanon, bomb Syria, and now strike Iran without the support – primarily, though not exclusively military – that it has received for many years from the United States and Western imperialism. There is no doubt that Israel defends its own interests, sometimes with little regard for the will of its imperialist patrons – which, after all, is not uncommon for henchmen. The fact remains, however, that Israel is supported so unconditionally by the Western imperialist powers because they have a fundamental interest: to maintain a firm foothold in an unstable region of strategic importance.
THE IMPOTENCE OF APPEALS FOR PEACE
As in every war, here too we hear appeals for peace, for negotiations, for respect for international law – but these calls, always futile and hypocritical, this time do not come from the great Western democracies, which are fully committed to the unconditional support of Israel’s attack. Some imagine that it is possible to exert pressure – perhaps through demonstrations – on the leaders of the great powers to bring wars to an end, especially this one, and to ensure compliance with international law, humanitarian law, and other bourgeois nonsense that is constantly trampled underfoot.
In reality, it is not the will of some so-called “warmongers”, but the overall international situation – marked by the escalation of all kinds of tensions – that is pushing the world toward military confrontations, up to the possible outbreak of a third world war in the near future. The wars in the Middle East, just like the war in Ukraine, grow out of the fertile ground of capitalism in crisis and, regardless of the specific circumstances that sparked them, reveal the threat looming – and continuing to loom – over the proletariat and the oppressed masses of the world: to become cannon fodder on the frontlines, exploited labour in capitalist labour camps, or targets for bombs during air raids.
THE ONLY SOLUTION: CLASS WAR AGAINST CAPITALISM
The proletarians are not condemned to powerlessness – they hold in their hands an immense potential, because it is precisely on their labour and its exploitation that the functioning of the bloody capitalist system is based. Through their struggle against this exploitation, they can halt the war machine even before they are able to destroy it together with capitalism and its states. To do this, however, they must break free from the forces that paralyse them by binding them to class collaboration in the name of national unity or the defence of the economy or the company – and they must rediscover the path of independent class struggle.
Through class war against capitalism, in unity with the proletarians and the exploited of the entire world, they will be able to put an end to bourgeois wars and thereby open the prospect of the only true help for the countless victims of these wars – the help that will come with the international communist revolution!
